When Faith Is Misused and Evil Is Dressed In Scripture.
It’s becoming disturbingly common for people to use religion and faith to defend wrong and promote injustice. A crime is committed and, suddenly, a verse from the Bible is quoted, not to comfort but to excuse and confuse. The truth becomes twisted, and you begin to question your sanity and ability to discern good from evil.
When the cruelty of one man is backed up by the support of another, the world becomes too heavy to handle. Recently, a case left me speechless.
A man committed an unthinkable act towards his own daughter. Something so cruel that it attracted public outrage and sympathy. The father in question sexually assaulted his four-year-old daughter and drowned her afterwards.
We all know that evil happens daily and should be duly punished. But somehow, someone saw a way to justify this act. What shook me even more was that he claimed that it was “The Lord’s way” of protecting the father’s marriage.
According to him, in Isaiah 6:4, the lord has a reason for everything, and he brings blessings for little sacrifices. He said that God sacrificed his son, but in this case, the girl's dad sacrificed her for “The Lord’s plan.”
At first, I asked myself questions. What was going on in the mind of this man? What was he thinking, interpreting the word of God this way?
He talked about God’s wrath being on anyone who questioned the man’s actions, and I thought to myself, what then happens to the one who not only distorts the truth but also confuses people and frames evil as divine intervention?
This isn’t just disturbing, it’s outrageous. Not only is his interpretation of Isaiah 6:4 wrong, even the verse is wrong too. It has nothing to do with the Lord's plan. There is no connection at all. He just framed the verse and twisted it to deceive people and justify his evil deed.
Many people read the scripture without truly understanding its meaning. Others use them in completely wrong and unrelated contexts, or twist it to suit their selfish interests. Faith, religion, and the Bible are meant to heal, guide and protect, not excuse violence.
Again, this is very traumatizing for both the victims and society at large. It may bring confusion for believers and silence the victims, while normalizing abuse.
As shocking as this man’s distortion of the truth was, many of us are guilty of misusing faith, not necessarily to justify evil but to avoid discomfort.
We quote Bible verses to stay hidden and comfortable in the face of justice, and to avoid being held accountable. But the word of God was never meant to be a hiding place for harm; rather, it is meant to be a light that brightens our path.
Discernment In a World of Distorted Faith.
After reflecting for a while, I asked myself: How do we protect our minds from distorted truths? How do we recognize a misuse of faith? How do we discern right from wrong and stay rooted in doing the right things? I don’t have all the answers yet. But I believe these few things will guide us and help us discern truth from manipulation.
- While reading the word of God, it’s important to understand its true meaning and explain it according to context and not emotions.
- As much as we would want to maintain our peace and remain comfortable in our comfort zones, the scripture shouldn’t be a cover for injustice.
- We all have moral instincts: listen to them. It’ll guide you when things become too complex.
- Always protect the vulnerable even when it’s uncomfortable.
- Surround yourself with spiritually sound individuals who honor truth.
